Two day professional courses



Helping Troubled Children and Adolescents: Part 1 and Part 2

Part 1. This two day course for professionals looks at both theory and practice. It focuses on assessment and therapeutic work with children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, abuse and family difficulties. It includes managing anxiety and containment, assessing attachment, communicating with distressed children, understanding their behaviour, dealing with resistance, and creating plans for intervention. It is suitable for those working with children and adolescents in residential, educational or community settings.

Part 2. This two day advanced course builds on the first course developing workers' skills and understanding of therapeutic interventions with disturbed and distressed children, and an understanding of their own responses to children's distress. It includes a psycho-dynamic understanding of the impact of loss and trauma at different developmental stages, building a relationship with disturbed children, understanding the worker's feelings, how defences create resistance to change. It is suitable for those working with children and adolescents in residential, educational or community settings.

This two day course for professionals offers a model for working therapeutically with parents and infants from birth to 3 years where there are concerns about their attachment and the infant's emotional development. It develops skills in the observation and assessment of parents and infants, assessing risk, developing attachment between parents and infants, and communication with toddlers through play with their parents.

Helping Adolescent parents and their infants

This two day course for professionals is specifically focused on the needs of teenage parents with emotional difficulties. It offers a model for working therapeutically with adolescent parents with infants from birth to 3 years where there are concerns about their attachment and the infant's emotional development. It recognizes the developmental needs of the adolescent parents and how this has to be reflected in our therapeutic approach. It develops skills in observation and assessment of parents and infants, assessing risk, developing attachment between parents and infants, and communication with toddlers through play with their parents.

Therapeutic approaches for children and adolescents who have experienced separation and loss

This two day course for professionals offers a psychodynamic model for working therapeutically with children who have experienced repeated or traumatic loss. It looks at the impact of separation and loss on children of different ages, and how this affects their capacity to build trusting relationships. It recognizes that in these children emotional distress is often exacerbated by the experience of trauma and abuse. Participants will learn how to talk to children about these experiences and respond therapeutically to their expression of sadness, anger and distress through difficult behaviour.
